Every Tuesday morning I travel from my home in South Central LA to downtown LA to meet with my amazing friends and colleagues from the Downtown LA Chapter of TEAM Referral Network. I have done this so many times; I am always looking for the best route to take to avoid the morning rush hour traffic. Although I haven’t found a smooth sailing route yet, the best way is taking San Pedro Street all the way downtown. As I go this way I travel through low income neighborhoods all the way through the homeless shelter area of the Midnight Mission. As I look around I can see the people who have no transportation and are waiting way too long to catch an overcrowded bus to get to a low paying job. I also see the homeless people without shoes and without warm jackets, when I am cold and I know they must be freezing. I am often moved to action to become involved in community work to help these communities, but at the least I am reminded of everything I have to be grateful for. I may have my own personal and professional stressors and obstacles, but I have a warm blanket to sleep with at night and a wool jacket to wear when I am cold. Focusing on being grateful for being alive and all of our small blessings makes any other worries we might have dissipate and bring us back to our authentic selves. Whenever you feel overwhelmed with life’s challenges look around you and you will find so many things to be grateful for.
