These are a list of community partners and associations which I support:
THE LABOR COMMUNITY STRATEGY CENTER
The Strategy Center is a Think Tank/Act Tank for regional, national and international movement building, founded in 1989 and based in the 10 million-person world city of Los Angeles. Their campaigns, projects, and publications are rooted in working class communities of color, and address the totality of urban life with a particular focus on civil rights, environmental justice, public health, global warming, and the criminal legal system. They develop campaigns and demands that help build a revitalized world united front that can stop the rising tides of war, racism and imperialism, the ecological crisis and the growing police state.
WOMEN FOR WOMEN INTERNATIONAL
Women for Women International provides women survivors of war, civil strife and other conflicts with the tools and resources to move from crisis and poverty to stability and self-sufficiency, thereby promoting viable civil societies. We’re changing the world one woman at a time.
THE LOS ANGELES URBAN LEAGUE
Founded in 1921, the Los Angeles Urban League is the city’s premier organization in advancing equal opportunities on behalf of African Americans and other minority youths and adults through innovative job training, job placement, youth achievement and business development programs. The Los Angeles Urban League serves over 100,000 constituents annually and the mission of the League is to enable African Americans and other minorities to secure economic self-reliance, parity, power and civil rights through advocacy activities and the provision of programs and services in our uniquely diversified city and region.
PLANNED PARENTHOOD
Planned Parenthood believes in the fundamental right of each individual, throughout the world, to manage his or her fertility, regardless of the individual’s income, marital status, race, ethnicity, sexual orientation, age, national origin, or residence. We believe that respect and value for diversity in all aspects of our organization are essential to our well-being. We believe that reproductive self-determination must be voluntary and preserve the individual’s right to privacy. We further believe that such self-determination will contribute to an enhancement of the quality of life and strong family relationships.
COMMUNITY SERVICES UNLIMITED
The programs of Community Services Unlimited work to create a sustainable local food system where food is grown, distributed and bought within our own community, incorporating training and educational programs, the creation of jobs and entrepreneurial opportunities and supported by partnerships with regional farmers. Understanding that there are unjust and destructive systems that have created the social and environmental injustices that impact our community, the Community Food Village project is responding with a similar systems approach to building awareness, leadership and positive change. All of the project activities are intertwined and are implemented in partnership with individuals and organizations in the community.
PREVENTION INSTITUTE
Prevention Institute brings cutting-edge research, practice, and analysis to today’s pressing health and safety concerns. Determined to achieve health and safety for all, to improve community environments equitably, and to serve as a focal point for primary prevention practice, the Institute asks what can be done in the first place, before people get sick or injured.
BLACK GIRLS RUN!
The mission of Black Girls RUN! is to encourage African-American women to make fitness and healthy living a priority. According to the Centers for Disease Control, 80% of African-American women are overweight. BGR! wants to create a movement to lower that percentage and subsequently, lower the number of women with chronic diseases associated with an unhealthy diet and sedentary lifestyle.
